Why do I get vertigo? What causes vertigo?

Vertigo is a condition characterized by the sensation of spinning or dizziness, often caused by disruptions in the inner ear or issues affecting the central nervous system. Common causes of vertigo include:

  1. Inner Ear Disorders: The inner ear contains the vestibular system, which helps control balance. Issues like Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), Meniere’s disease, or labyrinthitis can lead to vertigo.

  2. Vestibular Nerve Inflammation: Known as vestibular neuritis, this condition involves inflammation of the vestibular nerve, which sends balance signals from the inner ear to the brain.

  3. Head or Neck Injuries: Trauma to the head or neck can disrupt the vestibular system or cervical spine, leading to vertigo symptoms.

  4. Cervicogenic Vertigo: Sometimes, neck problems, particularly issues with the upper cervical spine, can interfere with the body’s ability to balance, leading to vertigo.

  5. Other Causes: These include migraines, blood pressure issues, and certain medications.

Specific Chiropractic Approach to Vertigo

Upper cervical chiropractic care, which focuses on the alignment of the top two vertebrae of the spine (the atlas and axis), is one method that has been beneficial for some people experiencing vertigo, particularly cervicogenic vertigo. Here’s how this approach may help:

1. Addressing Upper Cervical Misalignments:

  • The atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae are positioned very close to the brainstem. Misalignments here can affect the function of the vestibular system by putting pressure on the brainstem or irritating nearby nerves.

  • By gently realigning these vertebrae, upper cervical chiropractors aim to restore normal nerve function, which may reduce or eliminate vertigo symptoms.

2. Restoring Blood Flow and Reducing Inflammation:

  • Misalignments in the cervical spine can impede blood flow to the brain. Correcting these misalignments may enhance blood flow, providing better oxygenation and nutrient delivery, which helps reduce inflammation and supports overall nervous system function.

3. Improving Balance and Nervous System Function:

  • The nervous system’s ability to accurately interpret spatial and balance cues depends on proper signaling from the neck. Realignment may help ensure clear communication between the brain and body, leading to improved balance and reducing sensations of dizziness.

4. Using Precision-Based Techniques:

  • Techniques like NUCCA, Blair, and Atlas Orthogonal involve detailed analysis, often using X-rays or other imaging, to identify the exact degree of misalignment in the upper cervical spine. This precision allows for a highly targeted and gentle adjustment, specifically aimed at relieving pressure and restoring normal function.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Vertigo

Many patients report significant improvement or even complete relief from vertigo symptoms after upper cervical chiropractic adjustments. The non-invasive nature of this approach is especially appealing, as it focuses on correcting the root cause rather than simply masking symptoms. Additionally, this approach is drug-free, making it a suitable option for individuals seeking natural treatment options.

For someone suffering from vertigo, it may be beneficial to consult with a chiropractor specializing in upper cervical techniques, as this could help address potential misalignments contributing to the condition.
